Fujitsu Software Obtains Rights to zBatch and Brings Production MVS/zOS JCL Batch Jobs to Windows Server

Fujitsu Software enables execution of mainframe batch jobs on much cheaper hardware.

Sunnyvale, February 17th, 2004 – Fujitsu Software Corporation today announced that it has obtained rights to zBatch™, a product of zBatch LLC that is designed to streamline the task of migrating mainframe applications to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 to significantly reduce costs.

“We are already working with customers who see up to 75% savings in their annual mainframe budgets by migrating to Windows Server configurations,” stated Ron Langer, Sr. Director of Fujitsu Software Corporation. “Providing them with the means to migrate their batch applications quickly and painlessly reduces the costs and timescales for migrating and increases the appeal of making the move. Because zBatch is designed for production use it is exactly the right product for the task.”

Fujitsu Software will use zBatch to complement its NetCOBOL® and NetKicks™ migration solutions. zBatch is a mainframe MVS JCL executor that is designed for production use in Microsoft Windows environments. It greatly simplifies the task of migrating systems off mainframes to Microsoft Windows Server 2003 by allowing JCL to be executed with virtually no changes.

Howard Hinman, co-founder of zBatch LLC., stated "Given the high performance and stability of Fujitsu's NetCOBOL for Windows COBOL development suite, Enterprise COBOL users now have a mission critical COBOL platform on Windows to port their COBOL applications to. But moving MVS batch applications to Windows is historically challenging given the lack of MVS services and compatibility in the Windows environment. zBatch alleviates these historical problems and provides MVS like system services, such as JCL and PROC execution, dataset catalog services, MVS to Windows report formatting, and native MVS utilities. zBatch thus greatly reduces the amount of work and coding changes required to COBOL batch programs when migrating them to the Windows environment for production.”

“Enterprises are increasingly looking to migration off the mainframe as a way to modernize applications and reduce total cost of ownership,” said Nick Parker, director, Microsoft enterprise services and technology partners. “With solutions like NetKicks, Fujitsu Software is helping clients transition more easily from a mainframe environment to Windows Server 2003. The acquisition of zBatch will extend Fujitsu’s migration offerings even further and allow clients to quickly port existing MVS applications to Windows and save money.”

zBatch is tightly integrated with NetCOBOL for Windows and includes support for important features such as Generation Data Groups (a means of cycling data files automatically), utilities like IEBGENR, IEFBR14, IKJEFT01 and print spooling services that preserve the layout of mainframe report files while delivering them in PC and Web-compatible formats.

zBatch will be released in early 2004, with early versions available now for evaluations.
